For most situations, 3-6 ft is a solid starting point. Shorter leaders (2-3 ft) work for reaction baits and stained water. Longer leaders (6+ ft) are better for clear water and finesse techniques. If fish are leader-shy, go longer. If you're breaking off at the knot, go shorter.

Fluorocarbon is the most popular leader material — it's nearly invisible underwater and abrasion resistant. Monofilament is cheaper and has more stretch, which can be good for topwater. Braid-to-braid connections aren't recommended for leaders. Use fluoro for most situations.
In clear water (5+ ft visibility), yes — braid is highly visible and can spook fish. In stained or muddy water, you can fish braid directly to the lure. A fluorocarbon leader gives you invisibility near the bait while braid mainline gives you sensitivity and casting distance.
