Buzzbait Guide

A buzzbait is a topwater lure with a spinning blade that creates a buzzing wake on the surface. It has a wire frame, a weighted body, and a rubber skirt. Buzzbaits are designed to be retrieved at a steady pace across the surface, creating vibration and splash that triggers reaction strikes from bass. They're 1/4-1/2 oz and work best in warm water around cover.

Cast to cover and retrieve at a steady pace — don't stop. The blade needs to spin continuously to create the buzzing wake. Vary speed: faster for active fish, slower for inactive fish. Cast past the target and reel through cover. Buzzbaits are weedless — they slide over grass, wood, and pads without snagging.

Buzzbaits work best in warm water (65°F+) when bass are active. Early morning and late evening are prime times. In summer, buzzbaits are effective all day around shade and cover. They're particularly good around grass edges, laydowns, and docks. Avoid buzzbaits in cold water — bass won't chase surface lures when water is under 55°F.

Use a 7' medium-heavy casting rod with fast action. Line: 30-40 lb braid — braid floats and provides maximum sensitivity for hooksets. Avoid fluorocarbon — it sinks and can pull the lure under. A high-speed reel (7.3:1+) helps you maintain contact with the blade and set the hook quickly.

White or chartreuse for visibility in most conditions. Black for low light (dawn, dusk, overcast). The color matters less than the vibration — buzzbaits trigger reaction strikes, so focus on the retrieve, not the color. Add a soft plastic trailer for extra bulk and action.
